A ceramic material is an inorganic non metallic often crystalline oxide nitride or carbide material. For example clay has chemically bonded water in it which will cause it to slake down disintegrate when a dried clay object is put in water. Usually they are metal oxides that is compounds of metallic elements and oxygen but many ceramics. Once the ceramic has been shaped it is fired in a high temperature oven known as a kiln.

Once heated fired to between 660 and 1470 f 350 and 800 c the clay is converted to ceramic and will never dissolve again. Technically ceramics are those things made from materials which are permanently changed when heated. Industrial ceramics are commonly understood to be all industrially used materials that are inorganic nonmetallic solids. Ceramic art is art made from ceramic materials including clay it may take forms including artistic pottery including tableware tiles figurines and other sculpture as one of the plastic arts ceramic art is one of the visual arts while some ceramics are considered fine art as pottery or sculpture most are considered to be decorative industrial or applied art objects.

While the earliest ceramics were pottery the term encompasses a large group of materials including some pure elements. Ceramics are generally made by taking mixtures of clay earthen elements powders and water and shaping them into desired forms.
