These cones are used in firing porcelain floor tile china stoneware structural clay products and some refractory materials. Pyrometric cones are pyrometric devices that are used to gauge heatwork during the firing of ceramic materials. Pyrometric cones are used worldwide to monitor ceramic firings where consistent temperature is important to the quality of the final product being fired cones are used both in industry and by ceramic artists alike.

The box will come in 25 sets that when split apart is 50 cones. Pyrometric cones measure heatwork the effect of time and temperature. Because cones are made from carefully formulated ceramic compositions they bend reliably at specific temperature ranges. Pyrometric cones will be the first to let you know your ceramic firing is under control or that subtle changes.

For example to achieve a witness cone 06 you might need a cone 05 hotter in the sitter. Cones enable you to determine when your kiln has reached the desired temperature if the kiln was evenly heated and whether a problem arose during the firing. So for a cone 05 firing you would put an 05 small cone in the kiln sitter. The cones often used in sets of three are positioned in a kiln with the wares to be fired and provide a visual indication of when the wares have reached a required state of maturity a combination of time and temperature.

Note that many people find that they have to put cones in the kiln sitter that are 1 cone hotter than desired to get the correct result on the shelf witness cones.
